THE LUCK OF THE STARS
Last week saw the release of The Great Mormon Conspiracy, a non-fiction book that reads almost like a fictional
tome, by mother-son writing team Alta and Monte Lyon.
In the publishing world, timing is close to the most important part of the whole scenario. Thus it was with great glee
that the co-authors learned this, as released by PBS TV.
"The Mormons" (working title)
AN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE - FRONTLINE Special Presentation (two 90-minute episodes,
"The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints is one of America's fastest growing religions,
and its influence circles the globe. The church has 11 million members today and over half of them live outside the U.S. Yet
the birth of Mormonism and its history is one of America's great neglected narratives. This three-hour documentary brings
together FRONTLINE and AMERICAN EXPERIENCE in their first co-production to provide a searching portrait of this fascinating
but often misunderstood religion. Produced by award-winning filmmaker Helen Whitney ("Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero," "John
Paul II: The Millennial Pope"), the film will explore the richness, the complexities, and the controversies of the Mormons'
story as told through interviews with leaders and members of the church, with leading writers and historians, and with supporters
and critics of the Mormon faith."
Also, strong news of the Mormon bigamist who was captured in Nevada last fall is projected to go to trial in the
spring, at the latest reportings. If that happens, will the media attention be that of the O.J. Simpson trial? If so, Monte
and Alta have another built-in sales pitch for their book.
So what exactly is the premise of The Great Mormon Conspiracy?
Presented as a dialogue between Grandmother and Granddaughter, Mormon history and its beliefs unfold as never before.
Grandmother, convinced of the legitimacy of Joseph Smith, discloses to an inquisitive teen the betrayal and deceit she has
uncovered in a forty-year quest for the truth. What unfolds is a complex drama that transformed Joseph Smith’s focus
on the eternal into a gospel fixated on the flesh. A transformation paved on a trail of blood that would necessitate the eventual
murdering of Joseph Smith and other family members at the hands of his own followers disguised as a mob. A trail that would
climax thousands of miles away in a desert where the leader of this deceit, Brigham Young, would bring the United States Government
down upon the church by orchestrating the slaughter of a wagon train. Unimaginable brutality for the four thousand dollars
in gold they carried that was desperately needed to finance Brigham Young’s obsessions. The story concluded with the
self-appointed leader taking his own life rather than facing justice at the hands of a nation who waited patiently with canons
aimed at his estate.
This is the second Star* book by Monte Lyon. His first book, Emotion: Master or Servant? (self-help inspirational)
is one of Star's top-selling books.
In addition, Monte and his wife Tanya welcomed a brand new bouncing baby boy last week. Monte, it looks like your
